Publicity and VisibilityFrom time to time, Walter says that we need to do things that will increase the visibility of D outside of the D community. Each little effort is in itself probably too small for a noticable effect, but over time and with many such efforts, we make a difference. I try to take every opportunity, both because I want D to succeed, but also because I want to succeed in having D programming as my main source of income. Of course, when I discuss and plug D, I usally plug Tango too. Shamelessly even. Two of the latest efforts I've been through, are related to statistics and social networking sites. I registered Tango as a project on CIA, which in addition to keeping stats on commits to your repository, also provides notifications to those who asks for it. Currently we have a bot in #d.tango that puts out a message on each commit. If the Tango team regularly commits 20+ times a day, Tango may be on the front page of CIA those days (this is not likely to be a common occurance though), increasing visibility. Secondly, I registered Tango as a project on Ohloh which is a social networking site for open source programmers, and users of open source software. Ohloh provides quite nice statistics, but has an issue with D code (it don't recognize it), so if you feel like it, register on Ohloh and petition for D support in this thread. When registered, you can also stack the D projects you are using (Tango, ArcLib, etc) to give them higher visibility in searches. Ohloh seems to have a few thousand users, but fairly few active in the forums. Maybe the D community could make a real impact on this site? :) By larsivi at 2007-09-06 12:05 | D programming language | Free software | Open source | Programming | Tango | larsivi's blog | add new comment
