M

What is it with this guy and letters lately? Well, M has a prominent position in my life these days, considering it's the first in my son's name, something we hear a lot about him recently turning 4. In this post, it's all about a Norwegian comic though.

M is named after its creator, Mads Eriksen, and is semi biographical. Although it would be a rather insane life if all was true ... By chance, I have followed this comic since its inception, that is before it was printed the first time, as Mads' brother was my boss in an early job I had and his early tests had their place in the company's internal network. Extra funny is it of course the times the brother, my earlier boss, makes an entry in the comic, usually as the computer expert.

This post is mostly about the book M - de første årene (M - the first years) which arrived in shops before christmas and ended under the tree as a present for me. I've already read through it, and although I believe I've read it all before, damn it was funny.

The jokes are often about his life with the madam, his life living on the edge of a comic writers deadline, and most of all, about his popular cultural interests. I guess these appeal to me as a nerd, as Mads is very interested in Star Wars, ninjas, other comics and so on. The references made to such movies, comic books, action figures etc are excellently executed, often very obvious and at times very subtle. He doesn't worry himself on iota when it comes to joking with what you're not supposed to joke with and has been reported to the police for blasphemy (luckily this is no longer something anyone get charged for here) at least a couple of times. However, the one being made fun of, is Mads himself.

If you read Norwegian, or find the comic translated (haven't heard of this sofar), I can heartily recommend it to anyone living in the same world as me. The jokes dependent on Norwegian culture should be relatively few.
